This qualification explores the statutory requirements of the early years framework; the early years foundation stage (EYFS), along with non-statutory guidance, Development Matters and Birth to 5 Matters.

This qualification has been developed to engage practitioners in specialist training when caring for babies and young children under 2 years, as identified in the statutory requirements. An early years setting refers to any professional care provided for babies and young children under 2 years. This qualification is not full and relevant.

Who is it suitable for?

This qualification is designed as continuing professional development to improve professional skills for practitioners working with babies and young children under 2 years, or for those volunteering with babies and young children under 2 years, in an early years setting.         

How is this qualification structured?

In order to achieve this award, learners must complete one mandatory unit:  

  • Working with babies and young children under 2 years in adherence with statutory requirements (A/651/4434)
How is it assessed?

This qualification will be internally assessed. Types of assessment include a portfolio of evidence, written assignments and direct observation in the workplace.

Do you need to be working to enrol on this qualification?

Applicants must be working or volunteering in an early years related role with babies and young children under 2 years.   

What are the entry requirements?

Learners should be at least 16 years of age and meet the criteria below:

  • Working or volunteering in an early years role
  • To be able to attend the virtual classroom session
  • To be in a position to carry out three to four hours of study per week
  • To have the appropriate level of literacy
  • To have regular access to a computer which will allow you to access the on-line portfolio system
  • To be able to surf the internet, send and receive emails with attachments, complete written work using a computer (with Microsoft Word) and be generally IT literate
How long will it take?

Approximately 3-4 months. Learners will be enrolled for 4 months.

How much will it cost?

The course fee is £550, this includes the Early Years Alliance student membership. Membership includes access to EYA Learn online training courses.

How will the training be delivered?

This course is delivered via a blend of small group virtual teaching sessions, online learning and written tasks. 

You will be supported by an assessor who will deliver the teaching sessions, set tasks, mark and give feedback on your work.

It is important that you attend virtual teaching sessions and meet the deadlines set by your assessor in order to complete within the allocated time frame.

Your assessor will also arrange a visit to your workplace or placement to observe your practice.

Enrolment process:

  • Application form – to be completed in full and returned.
  • Telephone Interview – our assessor will contact you to discuss the course content and delivery. 
  • Online Literacy/Numeracy assessments – you will be provided with a login to complete assessments online
  • Funding options, information, advice and guidance â€“ one of our training advisors will contact you to discuss options available to you. 
  • Induction confirmation – the date of your induction and formal start date will be confirmed
  • Enrolment paperwork – the formal enrolment paperwork will be issued to you to review and sign. 
  • Formal start – attend the induction/first day of learning. 
  • Assessment – over the duration of the course, assessment will be made up of regular, on-line assessor guidance, planning, feedback and observation.
